The cost of poor OHS culture

In its latest edition of Safety Soapbox, WorkSafe reveals that record court fines for failing to keep workplaces safe were issued in 2015-2016.

These new figures indicate that 108 businesses and 21 individuals were fined or ordered to pay restitution totalling more than $6.2 million.

It is re-assuring to see that finally WorkSafe is showing some teeth in the fight against bad OHS culture in Victorian workplaces.

Prosecutions are more common and successful than ever with not only companies but also individuals paying the price for their responsibilities in workers being injured and too often killed at work.

WorkSafe Chief Executive, Clare Amies, said " if it is found that employers have failed to provide a safe working environment for their workers, they can expect to face large fines and significant damage to their reputation".

She added " Prosecutions are an important deterrent to help protect honest workers and the employers who fund the workers' compensation scheme.”
